Our home is a 6th floor, centrally located, penthouse (with lift) on an Amsterdam canal, with large terrace. The living room – with floor to ceiling windows on three sides – is spacious (150 sq mtrs/1600 sq feet), modern and comfortable. The terrace ( 70 sq mtrs/750 sq ft) surrounds our penthouse on three sites and has sun all day, from morning till sunset and a stunning – almost surround – roof top view of Amsterdam.

Apartment overview:
The apartment is newly built (2008) and has an elevator. Every room has floor to ceiling windows and access to the terrace. The apartment has one bedroom with twin beds and an office with a pullout couch (160 × 200). In the office is an Imac and hi speed wifi. There is one bathroom adjacent to the master bedroom and a separate shower with the study. In the hallway is a separate wc.

The Italian design kitchen has ample working space, a stove, an oven, a steam oven and microwave and of course a dish washer.
In our garage we have two city bikes that can be used. Use of our car is also negotiable.

We are a long time couple. We both are retired psychologists (68 and 65). Emma worked at the department of medicine of the Amsterdam University and Ineke in mental health care. We are active in our community, doing different kinds of volunteer work.
We are healthy and active, playing tennis and hiking. We love travel, the theater, are avid readers. We like good food both at home and in restaurants.

Our apartment is quite centrally located, near the main museums (Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum and the Museum of Modern Art), and near Vondelpark (Amsterdams main park) and Rembrandt park.
The apartment is situated in a nice area with lots of shops of all types, quite near to public transport. The neighborhood has quite a number of good restaurants.

it is both very close to the center of town (15 minutes by tram) and close to the Amsterdam round-way.

Thinking about writing notes of our trip while in Amsterdam, I had to stop to consider if I really wanted to share the experience or keep it a selfish secret. Apparently, there was some clandestine feeling going on since my fingers never reached for the keyboard.

Ineke and Emma reached out to us for this home exchange. We have been to Amsterdam multiple times, thus know the city well. On general terms, I shun return trips to places once visited, but at times, I will cave in for a second visit. Yet there is something about The Netherlands that draws me like a magnetic force.

Ineke and Emma live outside of the gay scene. Actually, this caused some hesitation on my part as this was the area from which my navigation senses come into play. Put me in any gay area of the city and I can find my way from canal to canal.

When we arrived after 9pm, we took the bus in Emma’s instructions, got off at the stop she mentioned and then proceeded to walk about five blocks. Their apartment is on the sixth floor of a modern apartment building with an elevator. We were not prepared for how gorgeous the apartment turned out to be.

With only two apartments on the top floor, their terrace surrounds three sides of their space. All of the walls are glass composed of six oversized sliding glass doors: two in the kitchen area, two in the living room area and two in the bedroom. Between the décor and the way space was utilized, I could have been happy never leaving the apartment.

This alone was worth the exchange. With the weather in our favor, we spent time sitting on the terrace as the sun set, watching the city change from vibrant to subdued. It was a real chore having to leave each day to explore. The thought did cross our minds of becoming urban squatters and never leaving. Of course, we would need to make a quick run to the bakery and full sized grocery store that were just three doors away.

If Ineke and Emma offer you an exchange, don’t think twice about it. Regardless of the weather, the apartment alone is a delightful experience you will not regret.
