Walthamstow is a diverse part of east London, a creative hub with many artists, designers & makers, rubbing shoulders with people from all cultures. It is said that over 75 languages are spoken around London’s longest market on the High street.

- Take a local walk around the area to discover the colourful street art by artists from around the world, around the St James area as well as the Wood Street Walls collective

- Stroll or cycle around Walthamstow marshes & you might bump into the cows, kestrels or grebes, follow the canal & discover Hackney, the Olympic park & beyond

- Discover locally made hipster craft beer at the Wild Card Brewery or locally made Gin at Mother’s Ruin

- For an East London institution, try L Manze’s ‘Pie & Mash’ on the High Street, not far from the Chequer’s Pub, which also does great pub grub

- For lazy brunch, pop down to 56 St James coffee house or Blackhorse Lane workshops, where artisan & hipster brunch is served courtesy of Wood Street coffee. In the summer, there is also an outdoor market in the yard on Sundays, selling handmade foods & locally made designer items

- A visit to God’s Own Junk Yard is a must at Walthamstow village, to delight in the neon heaven made for films, music videos & theatre

- Walthamstow village is a conservation area with a pedestrianised street full of restaurants, tapas bar, pubs & cafés, as well as the Ancient House, Walthamstow’s oldest building built during Tudor times. If you visit on a Sunday, there’s an indoor market selling fresh artisan bread, fish, cheeses as well as home-made Kimchi

- Visit the renowned William Morris gallery, which celebrates the Arts & Crafts movement founded by William Morris who was the “Father of Walthamstow”

- This international gallery is next to the regenerated Lloyd Park, which is worth a visit too, featuring award-winning planting schemes with a bridge over an island which was first built in 1857

- Around the Lloyd park area are some great pubs, from The Bell on Forest Road to coffee at the Wynwood Art District or vegetarian fare at Bulah & Co

- Pop into the Italian Delicatessen where our good friend Elisabetta sources her ingredients delivered from Sicily every day

- While on Hoe street, visit Mirth Marvel & Maud which is a grade II listed former theatre, now a food and drink venue, with live acts upstairs. Designed by Russian flamboyant stage designer Theodore Komisarjevsky in the 1920s, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were in St Petersburg

- Local eateries include Sodo Pizza, Thai food at YumYum, flame cooked ribs & burgers at Woodstock Grill, Caribbean at Turtle Bay

- Visit the vintage & quaint Hillman’s Tea Room at Wood Street to sample typically British High Tea, with sandwiches & scones served by our mate Jason, followed by a little stroll around the Wood Street market (which sells beard oil. Yes, it’s a thing)

- For a high end dining experience, check out Denim N Dine. Michelin-star chef Pedro Passinhas serves an experiential taster menu in a local atelier denim warehouse on Blackhorse Lane. Pop-up dates are secretive & only announced on Twitter (@DenimDine). The denim atelier also sells organic indigo bespoke jeans, handmade on site by local craftsmen

Beyond the buzzy local scene & for the more typical central London touristy sites, hop on the Victoria Line from Blackhorse Road or Walthamstow Central station and in less than 25 minutes you’ll find yourself at Oxford Circus, Regent street, Carnaby street, the West end theatre heartland at Leicester Square, as well as the gay scene around Soho
